All is clear 03:54
You spend your life keeping out of trouble, Minimising all those risks. Chasing fortune, hoping to get lucky, Til the endgame comes. The wind that blew through your convictions, Hit me with both fists. Up to her knees in the paddy fields, The medal less survivor of the wars. All is clear, All is bright, In the silent night. All is clear, All is bright. Look into the future, Til the endgame comes. In the silent night, silent night. All is clear, All is bright, In the silent night. All is clear, All is bright. In the silent night… (to end)

Ash to Fire 03:48
So here’s the truth, Lies, lies, lies. It’s written on my face, falling from my lips. Ash to fire, I am the liar. I warned you, I’d scorn you, So what are you waiting for? Sit by the fire. I get so tired. I’m older, much colder, So what are you waiting for? In America you sleep, and dream. Hold your lover in his sleep, and dream. So here’s the truth, Lies, lies, lies. It’s written on my face, falling from my lips. Now it’s too late. For reappraisal… Ash to Fire. In America you sleep, and dream. Hold your lover in his sleep, and dream. Wait forever, For you to fall. Burning for a thousand years, It’s you alone I love. Love, love, love. Love, love, love. You alone I love. Love, love, love. Love, love, love. Love, love, love. You alone I love.

Cut me Up 03:37
Cut me up Lazy, I’m good for nothing, baby. Take a razor blade and cut me out, There’s no doubt, I’m doing you no good. Crave me, Once in a while you used to crave me. Your weaknesses enslaved me, Now you must unchain me. Cut me loose and let me go. How does she love him? Just as it seems. Like St Peter loves jangling his keys, Like Brighton Pier loves tumbling to the sea. Angels, I hear a choir of angels. Calling from the fires below, Let him go, He’s doing you no good. Save yourself and let him go, Cut him loose and let him go, He’s doing you no good.

How do I love Thee (free) 05:33
How do I love thee? Do you love me when I’m miserable? Do you love me when I’m down? Do you love me when I’m in a hole, digging in the ground? Do you love me when I tell the truth? Do you love me when I don’t? Do you love me when my xylophone plays every other note? Do you love me when I read a book? Do you love me when I smoke? Do you love me when our loving reaches fever pitch, on the boat? Do you love me when we kiss like they do on the telly? Do you love me? I could find you everything, your crying heart’s desire. Life could end so suddenly, reaching for the stars. Do you love me when I’m feasible? Do you love me when I’m rich? Do you love me when I’m risible, lying in a ditch? Do you love me when I eat your cake? Do you love the bread I make? Do you love me like an animal? Do you love me like a snake? I could find you everything, your crying heart’s desire. Life could end so suddenly, reaching for the stars. Your mother kept you talking quietly, While you were walking to your car. I grabbed the wheel And tried to steer you into The path of an oncoming truck. You said you didn’t know I loved you that much. I could find most everything, your crying heart’s desire. Life could end so suddenly, reaching for the stars. I could find you everything, your crying heart’s desire. Life could end so suddenly.

If I Could 03:04
If I could, I would write you now a letter, Watch you read it at the moment we first met. Standing there with your girlfriends on the dance floor, Words of love, precious stones of hate. Hold me like you never hold me now. Kiss me like you never kiss me now. It’s all in the letter that I wrote to you. Rain running down the window, Your brother strumming an out of tune guitar. Your mother gave us some money for the pictures, We planned to run away we didn’t get that far. Hold me like you never hold me now. Kiss me like you never kiss me now. It’s all there in the letter. The bus it passes, rain it splashes, Ruins all my fags and matches. Now I drown, I walk to town in my Levi flares and Doctor Marten’s. There lies Julie on her bed of nails. Poignant memories of all, Poignant memories of all the loves that failed, Poignant memories of all the loves that failed, Poignant memories of all the loves that failed. Hold me like you never hold me now. Kiss me like you never kiss me now. It’s all there in the letter.

Giuseppe my lawyer, runs his business from his bed. Sick in the morning, sick in the night and in the head. When I get my car we’ll take a day out on the coast, Looking for lovers. Watching from the bridge to see who’s giving who the most. Looking for lovers. One last chance to look down there before I take you home (one last chance) Lovers… One by one along the bridge the lights are coming on, One by one the lovers are leaving. No more, looking for lovers… Lovers… (one last chance) Looking for lovers Lovers…

Saw you walking with another girl, From another part of town. Saw you walking with another girl From another part of town. You were a man with no illusions, Rarely taken in, By the scent of perfume on your fingers, Or other things that linger. There was a time we walked together Round and round the lake. Past the couples in the long grass, Tongues flickering like snakes. Saw you walking with another girl, From another part of town. (Things are hectic) Saw you walking with another girl From another part of town. Now I hear that you have fallen down, The word has gone around. And the girl that you are living with Is from another part of town.

Spaniola 04:44
I got the hang of how I turn on the lights. Took a while and some fiddling round, but eventually I got it right. They’re burning bright now, Lighting up the night. Now I don’t feel so alone. Customary practice for a songwriter to write Songs with bitter endings at the final stage of life. Sick and tired of keeping up and struggling to do so. Love to be in company, Love to be… Robinson Crusoe. I’m walking naked now along my own deserted beach. Tapping out this rhythm on my two remaining teeth. What’s the point of solitude with no one here to share it? Where’s the fun in nakedness with no one here to bear it? Now I don’t feel so alone. Over-stimulated from the cradle to the grave. That’s my generation man, There’s nothing left to save. No truths we have not compromised, No rights we have not waived. No causes we ain’t buried, No principles unscathed.

Pays for favours by the hour. Goes to market to get flowers. Wanders home between the showers. In the middle distance there’s a room. In the middle of the night you hear her call. She took him down with a Suffolk punch. The feint to the left was a big mistake. A punch is the mouth is so offensive. Hear her call. The gap between the pushchair and the future Is closing… In the bus shelter she cowers. Waiting bloody waiting. Hear her call.

Walk by the River (free) 05:28
Got my own imagination And I keep it to myself. Every night I go down to the river And I look for you in there. I go down to the river, To the same place every night. I see your reflection, In the pale moonlight. I… love you, In the same way that I did. What has gone is best left unimagined, No more of this. It’s just a little movie, Hits the same spot every night. He puts his loving arms around her, And her soul turns cold with fright.

about

The Gap (between the pushchair and the future) is a line from Wating Bloody Waiting. A fan in Belgium said recently that she would like this track played at her wedding. See what you think.

This is effectively Coil's second album. We wrote and recorded these songs through late 2010 and early 2011 - and released the album to coincide with a gig in Berlin in June 2011.

We recorded most of the album in Finbar's kitchen. We still record most of our music there.

Liam Sharp produced the Coil logo for the album and Rick Tailby did the back cover and assembly. Paintings on the front and back of the sleeve are by Paul Johnstone.
