about

Flann O'Brien's novel, 'At Swim-Two-Birds', T S Eliot's Sweeney Agonistes, and D H Lawrence's Women in Love, a spell on the Wicklow coast at Silver Strand plus one or two Irish catholic references all crowd into this song. The opening lines are 'Cold water walking up the ladder of my spine, clipping from the holiday, dripping in the brine' and away we go on a maniacal tour of Wicklow and Dublin City, with cowboys and Indians and whistling crabs too. Yes, it was a very memorable holiday.

The sound engineer said we couldn't drop the pace and level of the song in the middle and end sections. We were glad we did.

lyrics

Cold water walking up the ladder of my spine.
Clipping from the holiday, dripping in the brine.
Cold water spreads the mud, flat back to the horizon.
Heat cracks the hollow crabs, upturned to whistle.

La la la, la la la la.
Cold water holiday!
La la la, la la la la.
Cold water holiday!
La la la, la la la la.
Cold water holiday!

Cold water cracking back the shingle to the rocks,
Hands across the oceanic semen of the fox.
Sweeney and his nightingales
Clamber to the moon.
Cowboys and Indians whistle an old tune.

La la la, la la la la.
Cold water holiday!
La la la, la la la la.
Cold water holiday!
La la la, la la la la.
Cold water holiday!

You snapped your beak
And tore the instamatic
From my hand
Twisting snakes buried
To the pelvis pushing in the sand.
Put your finger in my mouth!

Cold water walking up the ladder of my spine.
Clipping from the holiday, dripping in the brine.
Sweeney and his nightingales
Clamber to the moon.
Cowboys and Indians whistle an old tune.

La la la, la la la la.
Cold water holiday!
La la la, la la la la.
Cold water holiday!
La la la, la la la la.
Cold water holiday!

You snapped your beak
And tore the instamatic
From my hand
Twisting snakes buried
To the pelvis pushing in the sand.
Put your finger in my mouth!
