about

This was the first song Coil ever played live, at a band competition at a Northampton Arts Festival (yes) in May ’78.
It is a great riff, Tony Harrison on bass in his great and unique style – much better than the song which in many ways is awful, but we loved it. It was loud and rough after all the hippy noodling we had had to endure all afternoon.
This was the arrival of punk in Northampton – it was late, it was already over, but it was great.
And we won 50 quid and effectively the competition. It was clear that the 100 quid winner was a stitch up but we didn’t care, it made it more punk than ever.

lyrics

Creeping out the Back Way

Creeping out the back way,
It’s all been done before.
It’s got to be the best way
To see you more and more.

But I don’t care
I don’t give a damn
It’s just that I
Don’t wanna get to see her old man.

She was only sixteen,
The apple of her Daddy’s eye.
If he should ever catch me,
This mother’s gonna die.

Well that’s alright
Well so it goes
As long as I
Can get to see you alone.

She’s the kind of lady
That creeps into your brain
You know I’m goin’ crazy.
She’s driving me insane.

Well that’s alright
Well so it goes
As long as I
Can get to see you alone.

He found us in his bedroom,
Rolling on his bed
He threw me out the window.
I landed on my head.

It’s over now,
Won’t see you again.
It’s over now
I guess that this is the end?
