about

Tony Harrison wrote the riff and counterpoint for this song on his Fender Bass and Phil worked a counterpoint riff to Tone’s bass – it was clever – and again the bass chords took the lead in shaping the song (listen to the opening of ‘Bullet’). Drums are great and there is that weird 70s synth sound from Mick Knight who played with us briefly.

I wrote the lyrics at work one afternoon and then we recorded it in Steve G’s four track studio that night. I sang the song through Phil’s Roland jazz chorus amp. This was a turning point for Coil but this was also in the heyday of fast punk. People didn’t get it and went off the boil in gigs when we played it. We had moved in weeks from trying to ape punk and not having our hearts in it – it was too easy and we had more to say and play and this song represented that shift.

lyrics

Garden Contract (or 'Frank')

Come around when you feel like it,
You could take me for a drive, drive.
Just want to see you you’re so sympathetic,
My sense of reason is deprived.

I want you but you don’t want me,
I like touching all the time.
I want you but do you want me?
I get voices all the time.

All the time…

It would be better if you came round tonight,
I vacillate from bad to worse and worse to bad.
My heart will burst at the full, full moon,
My hands are shaking oh
It’s too, too sad.

But you don’t need me.
You got money in the bank.
You tell me I’m weird and screwy,
You don’t have to be so frank,
Frank.

I still remember what you did Frank,
You shot your brother in the garden shed.
I know that it was just an accident,
It’s such a shame that he’s dead.

When you smile I get so nervous,
Silent laughter gets me scared.
Do you frighten me on purpose?
Is that why your teeth are bared?
Naked.
