How do I love Thee

from The Gap (2011) by Coil

/

about

Written after the pub and a lot of drink when I could not even see straight to write. Then put it in the song draw until Phil produced this great tune and we improvised it into shape, adding vocal melodies and refrain.
Much of it is true, snatches of stories woven together. In the end what do you have to do to prove you love someone?

lyrics

How do I love thee?

Do you love me when I’m miserable?
Do you love me when I’m down?
Do you love me when I’m in a hole,
digging in the ground?

Do you love me when I tell the truth?
Do you love me when I don’t?
Do you love me when my xylophone plays
every other note?

Do you love me when I read a book?
Do you love me when I smoke?
Do you love me when our loving reaches fever pitch,
on the boat?
Do you love me when we kiss like they do on the telly?
Do you love me?

I could find you everything,
your crying heart’s desire.
Life could end so suddenly,
reaching for the stars.

Do you love me when I’m feasible?
Do you love me when I’m rich?
Do you love me when I’m risible,
lying in a ditch?
Do you love me when I eat your cake?
Do you love the bread I make?
Do you love me like an animal?
Do you love me like a snake?

I could find you everything,
your crying heart’s desire.
Life could end so suddenly,
reaching for the stars.

Your mother kept you talking quietly,
While you were walking to your car.
I grabbed the wheel
And tried to steer you into
The path of an oncoming truck.
You said you didn’t know I loved you that much.

I could find most everything,
your crying heart’s desire.
Life could end so suddenly,
reaching for the stars.

I could find you everything,
your crying heart’s desire.
Life could end so suddenly.
