Steve Curtis (drummer) was a postman, briefly. As well as the joy of rising at 4am, Steve’s altercations with dogs on his rounds reinforced his hatred and drove him to write these lyrics one afternoon. Later that evening I Hate Dogs was written and Steve was very pleased.

Comedians tell a joke a few times and then move on. But audiences demand you play funny songs long after you have had enough of them. This is a song that came back and bit us on our arses, you could say.

The only thing was to do it faster and faster. The original track was 3:58…this live version, recorded at Billy Bragg’s hangout in Clopton, is fast, at 1.38.

I hate dogs all shapes and sizes,
Especially ones with large incisors,
Mangy critters with dirty habits,
I hate them all…..

Greyhounds, tripe hounds, corgis, poodles,
Turn them into crispy noodles;
Police dogs, guide dogs, gun dogs, sheep dogs,
I hate them all…..

See them crapping in the gutter,
Owners standing there, letting them do it,
Leaving their stinking mess behind them,
Making me puke and throwing up me biscuits.

Setters, springers, dachshunds, collies,
Bulldogs, boxers, Doberman pinchers,
Huskies, goldfish, cocker spaniels,
They’re just mongrels…..

Fido, Bonzo, Rover, Lassie,
Bengo, Pluto, Patch and Toby,
Sheeba, Sookie, Cindy, Sammy,
They make me sick…..

Worms and hardpad, mange and rabies,
Man’s best friend will kill your babies,
Growling, barking, snuffling, sniffling,
Licking their tads and moulting on the carpet…..
