about

I did wonder if it was possible to write a song, any song, again. After a gap of 22 years, song writing seemed done – an impossible task. When Phil and I met up again this was the first thing he played and I loved it. When the song emerged, it meant more than anything I can explain, like water in the desert, something you don’t know you have missed until you find it again. Well, this is what we do, said Phil.

lyrics

If I could, I would write you now a letter,
Watch you read it at the moment we first met.
Standing there with your girlfriends on the dance floor,
Words of love, precious stones of hate.

Hold me like you never hold me now.
Kiss me like you never kiss me now.
It’s all in the letter that I wrote to you.

Rain running down the window,
Your brother strumming an out of tune guitar.
Your mother gave us some money for the pictures,
We planned to run away we didn’t get that far.

Hold me like you never hold me now.
Kiss me like you never kiss me now.
It’s all there in the letter.

The bus it passes, rain it splashes,
Ruins all my fags and matches.
Now I drown, I walk to town
in my Levi flares and Doctor Marten’s.

There lies Julie on her bed of nails.
Poignant memories of all,
Poignant memories of all the loves that failed,
Poignant memories of all the loves that failed,
Poignant memories of all the loves that failed.

Hold me like you never hold me now.
Kiss me like you never kiss me now.
It’s all there in the letter.
